Hyun Lories is a Brussels based, emerging filmmaker with South Korean roots. He obtained his master degree at the Brussels RITCS, Royal Institute for Theatre, Cinema and Sound. His work is often inspired by the city and his former job as a social youth worker. Although he started film school to become a documentary filmmaker, he ended up writing and directing fiction films.
He graduated with the short film VERSAILLES, which premiered at the 2020 International Film Festival Gent and was rewarded the ACE Image Factory & The Fridge Audience Award. VERSAILLES won the 2020 Wildcard for Best Short Film by the Flemish Audiovisual Fund at the International Kortfilmfestival Leuven and had its international premiere at the 2021 Palms Springs International Shortfest. With VERSAILLES, Hyun Lories also has taken part in the EFP Future Frames program at the 55th Karlovy Vary IFF.

His previous short film DERRIÈRE LES MURS, debuted at the Sehsüchte International Student Film Festival and was screened at several festivals such as the 2017 ‘Encounters Film Festival’. DERRIÈRE LES MURS was awarded with the Next Generation Audience Award at the 2016 Brussels Short Film Festival.
Besides short films, his portfolio includes music videos and brand films.

Eonni (Sister)

Once Marie is cured from cancer, eva and Marie, two adoptee sisters, decide to finally go back to their birth country, South-Korea. Preparing the trip they’ve always dreamt of, they take Korean language classes, explore Korean pop culture and meet up with fellow adoptees. Delving into their adoption past they can rely on each other while exploring new terrain.
But things change when eva receives an email regarding her birth family, while Marie remains in the dark. After changing her name back to Soo-Jin, it doesn’t feel as good as she was hoping. She starts feeling increasingly estranged from everybody and everything related to her roots. eva thinks going back to South-Korea is not what she needs. She tells Marie that she won’t go anymore and for the first time in their lives, their unbreakable sister bond seems jeopardized.
In an attempt to reconnect, they discover that they were both imagining a different trip and that they look at their adoption in a totally different way.
