An empty space
When Lucy’s mother, Jeanne, a Québécoise immigrant tries to kill herself, Lucy reluctantly returns to the outskirts of London to care for a woman who, in her opinion, refuses to take care of herself. Commuting between her high-powered job in property development and their fractious mother-daughter relationship, Lucy is haunted by visions of her childhood. Spiraling out of control, she begins to act out in ways she can neither control nor understand. When a careless mistake (or arson?) means she is fired, Lucy finds herself at rock bottom; flailing around in a pond covered in bird shit, trying to save a duck from the hungry beak of a pelican. After a period of estrangement, Lucy returns home, posing as a potential buyer. Jeanne’s key in the door panics Lucy, who impulsively hides in the attic, emerging only when Jeanne sleeps. Lucy’s cover is blown when the child Jeanne babysits mistakes Lucy for a ghost. Unable to hide any longer, Lucy must confront herself and her mother.
